MIC's Louise Thompson and Ryan Libbey 'pulled the plug' on their wedding because it got too 'grand'

Made In Chelsea star Ryan Libbey admits his romantic Christmas wedding to Louise Thompson had to be postponed because the financial cost of their big day had ‘started to run away from them.’

The couple confirmed the wedding was off in June, with Louise, 29, insisting her decision to walk away from Made in Chelsea three months earlier had left her in a state of uncertainty after years of being told what to do.

But personal trainer Ryan, also 29, admits the mushrooming cost of their wedding, coupled with Louise’s reputation as a notorious spendthrift, resulted in them cancelling their plans.

He told the Balance podcast: ‘It was supposed to be this December. We had a reservation at Kew Gardens. It was teed up to be something magical and beautiful, but it started to run away from us. It started to be this grand thing.

‘It wasn't a reflection of who we are, so I pulled the plug on that, with consent from Louise.’

The couple are now planning a scaled down ceremony, and Ryan admits it will be away from the public eye.

‘We boiled it down to what we would like and it's not what people will expect,’ he explained.  ‘It’s quite difficult; Louise is something of a well-known person and there's some expectation and a certain level of hype around Louise Thompson's wedding. That’s real – I can tell it’s there for her.

‘But, at the same time, she is not silly with money. She's thrifty. She's a businesswoman. And I'm not one for being in the centre of the limelight so we want to do something abroad with close family and friends – perhaps a bit of a party or a long weekend.’

He added: ‘I know she likes Ibiza and we've looked at a venue. Didn’t book it. So the plan and hope is for Spring next year. May next year.

Ryan quit Made In Chelsea at the same time as Louise, and he admits his occasional appearances on the show had a negative impact on his mental health.

‘In hindsight, I should have [talked about it]. I didn’t really communicate to anyone that I was struggling to the extent that I was,’ he explained.

‘I don’t think Louise ever really knew that I was battling with that. I wish I had – I’d have saved myself a lot of aggravation and energy. It was lesson learned.

‘There was a necessary turning point to my approach to filming. I hardened up a little bit and cared less about the snappy [online] comments. So I guess it wasn’t all for nothing!

‘One thing that did remain was the social media backlash. It started off bad. Got worse. Got better. And then got worse again. It’s hard.’

Speaking to Celebrity Secrets in June about her decision to cancel her wedding, Louise said: ‘I did get really stressed about planning our big day, so Ryan and I have put the wedding on hold for a while.

‘There’s so much going on in our lives at the moment, so we want to wait until we feel really ready for it and not rush into anything. We want to do something that’s really “us” as well.’

Louise has had to cancel the wedding venue the couple had booked but luckily hadn’t picked out a dress for the big day.

She explained: ‘We had a venue booked for Christmas, so of course we’ve had to cancel that.

‘I hadn’t bought my dress, though. I've had designers approach me to work on a dress, and that's something I'll do when the time's right.

‘That’s the easy part – finding a dress, organising the catering and finalising the guests. It's just the bigger picture for myself and Ryan that we need to get to grips with first.’

The Edinburgh University graduate left Made In Chelsea show earlier this year shortly after her brother Sam, 26, announced his departure, and admitted she hasn’t been her ‘true self’ as a result of her stint on the show.

She added: ‘The problem is I’m just so used to being told what to do. I haven’t really been my true self for about 10 years, so I’m having a transition year for me this year.’
